Centaurs are minor planets, whose orbits usually are highly elliptical. According to IAU's (International Astronomical Union) definition their perihelion (the point in an orbit that is closest to the Sun) is beyond the orbit of Jupiter and their mean solar distance is inside the orbit of Neptune. The Deep Ecliptic Survey (DES) defines Centaurs as nonresonant objects with perihelia inside the orbit of Neptune.
Trans-Neptunian objects (cubewanos, plutinos, SDOs) have orbits, whose mean solar distance is beyond the orbit of Neptune. Quasi-centaurs, an unofficial designation introduced by astrologer Juan Revilla, are an extension of the centaur definition. Their semimajor axis is outside the orbit of Neptune but inside the orbit of Pluto and their perihelion distance is close to Uranus. |
