Crantor is a peculiar centaur, approximately 60 km in diameter. It was discovered in 2002. This body orbits the Sun in a 1:1 resonance with Uranus, and thus its orbital period of 85.8 years is near Uranus’s 84 years. Crantor follows a complex, transient horseshoe orbit around Uranus. It is a kind of quasi-satellite of Uranus.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Crantor is named from Greek mythology, but not after one of the centaurs, rather a Lapith who was killed by the centaur Demoleon in the wedding of Pirithous, the king of the Lapiths. The name Demoleon means \u201cthe lion of the people\u201d in English (Robert von Heeren, The Centaur Research Project<\/a>). Centaur Demoleon tried to throw a tree trunk at the king of Athens, Theseus, but he managed to evade it, and the trunk hit Crantor instead.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps Crantor gets at least some of its astrological meaning from Uranus, the planet of unpredictability, rebellion and brotherhood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
