Full Moon in Pisces — August 26, 2018, 11:56 UT

Sunday, August 26th, 2018

The Full Moon is always an opposition of the Sun and the Moon. Today’s Full Moon in Pisces was tightly aligned with another opposition, formed by two interesting minor planets. The Moon was in conjunction with a trans-Neptunian object (225088) 2007 OR10, which is orbiting the Sun in the scattered disc, among the coldest and most distant objects in the Solar System. The Sun in Virgo was in conjunction with 121725 Aphidas, the latest officially named centaur.

(225088) 2007 OR10 is big. It is the fourth-largest, possibly even the third-largest known body in the Solar System beyond the orbit of Neptune, and the largest known body in the Solar System still without a name. It was discovered 11 years ago, on July 17, 2007, by American astronomers Megan Schwamb, Michael Brown and David Rabinowitz. 2007 OR10 has a moon. In 2016, analysis of Hubble images taken in 2010 revealed a satellite, which was confirmed by a further analysis in 2017.

The discoverers nicknamed 2007 OR10 first as “Snow White” for its presumed white color. However, it was later revealed to be one of the reddest objects in the Kuiper belt, so the nickname was dropped. It has also revealed to be bigger than what first was thought.

In 2009 I wrote to Mike Brown and proposed naming 2007 OR10 from the Norse mythology, but he replied that he has been saving the Norse mythology for a distant and cold thing like Sedna. In Norse mythology the chief god Odin was at times using a disguise, which would match with the behavior of the object, but the name Odin is already used for an asteroid, so it cannot be used again.

There was a petition in the internet for naming 2007 OR10 as R’hllor, also known as the Red God or the Lord of Light, from the HBO series Game of Thrones, based on novels written by George R. R. Martin. There are other objects named from fictional mythologies (for example Borasisi, Manwë, Varda and Albion), so this is not an entirely impossible idea.

According to the International Astronomical Union’s rules, the discoverer of a minor planet has the privilege to suggest a name for the planet in question for a period of ten years following the numbering of the object. 2007 OR10 received the permanent number in 2009, so Mike Brown and his team will have some time left for their name suggestion, and then anyone will be able to make a proposal. Hopefully both bodies get named.

121725 Aphidas, the centaur in conjunction with the Sun now, was discovered on Dec. 13, 1999, by an American astronomer Carl W. Hergenrother. The orbital period is 76.23 years. The naming took place in October 2017. According to the official naming citation, “During the battle between the Centaurs and Lapiths, the centaur Aphidas remained in a drunken sleep. The Lapith Phorbas killed Aphidas with a thrown spear while he slept.”

People born with their Sun in conjunction with 121725 Aphidas are for example Anna Nicole Smith, Anneliese Michel, Rick Allen, Robbie Williams, Theresa May, Mr Lordi (Tomi Putaansuu).

Examples of events which occurred while the Sun was in conjunction with 121725 Aphidas:

Oct. 15, 1951 – Norethisterone, the progestin used in the combined oral contraceptive pill, is synthesized by Luis E. Miramontes in Mexico.

Sept. 30, 1955 – Actor James Dean is killed when his automobile collides with another car at a highway junction near Cholame, California.

Nov. 24, 1966 — The Beatles begin recording sessions for their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band L.P.

Dec. 3, 1967 — Christiaan Barnard carries out the world’s first heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

Jan. 27, 1973 — U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War ends with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords

May 20, 1983 — Two separate research groups led by Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier independently declared that a novel retrovirus may have been infecting people with HIV/AIDS, and published their findings in the same issue of the journal Science.

May 29, 1985 — Heysel Stadium disaster: Thirty-eight spectators are killed in rioting on the terraces during the European Cup final between Liverpool F.C. and Juventus at Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.

New Moon in Leo / Partial Solar Eclipse — August 11, 2018, 09:58 UT

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

By now it should be clear for all policymakers as well as ordinary people, that the climate change is real. The intense heat wave has caused devastation across the Northern Hemisphere. There has been excessive wildfires in Greece, California and Scandinavia; dried rivers in Germany, and ruined crops about everywhere.

The Paris climate agreement set actions to keep global warming limited below 2 degrees Celsius, but this may not be enough. Scientists are now warning about a domino effect of other factors, like melting ice, warming seas and dying forests, which could tilt the Earth into a state beyond which all human efforts will be futile.

The New Moon in Leo was a partial solar eclipse, the third eclipse in the current sequence. There is an ominous feeling surrounding this eclipse. The eclipse occurred at 18+ degrees of Leo in conjunction with asteroid 2 Pallas and trans-Neptunian 420356 Praamzius. Several planets are now in retrograde motion. Mercury retrograde is square to Jupiter, Mars retrograde is square to Uranus, and Venus is square to Saturn.

420356 Praamzius is a cubewano discovered in 2012 by a Lithuanian astronomer K. Černis and R. P. Boyle. It was named in February 2016 after an old Lithuanian chief god Praamzius. According to the official naming citation, Praamzius is the oldest and highest Lithuanian god related to the creation of the world. He is the god of the sky, peace and friendship in Lithuanian mythology. He is said to be also the ruler of time, the inescapable fate. He is also said to be the first beekeeper in the world.

About ten years ago the world was waking to the disturbing fact that bees were vanishing. We are not able to survive long without pollinators. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is the phenomenon that occurs when the majority of worker bees in a colony disappears and leaves behind a queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees to care of the remaining immature bees and the queen. Why this happens has not been entirely solved yet. Although there probably is more than just one cause for CCD, a link between bee colony collapse and climate change has been detected by researchers. Anyhow, climate change is the cause of species loss in general, and decrease of biodiversity is a threat to us.

Asteroid Pallas is the significator of wisdom and creative intelligence. Hopefully asteroid Pallas in conjunction with the eclipse is able to give us solutions in our worsening plight. The ban of plastic bags and straws is not enough for saving us. The Sabian symbol for the eclipse degree Leo 19 is “A houseboat party”. Without immediate and mutual action of all nations and people the party is over.
